Animated Spider-Verse Movie Gains Acclaimed Actor as Co-Writer

Everyone is familiar with the Spider-Verse movies from Sony Pictures Animation. For those who aren’t, these flicks showcase the growing saga of an alternate Spider-Man. They also explore other realities that possess their own unique Spider-Hero variants. Things, unfortunately, take a turn when the heroic protagonist faces opposition from everywhere.

The Spider-Verse is currently a two-movie series and focuses on a specific Spider-Man. But a future film will flip the script by focusing on a different arachnid-based hero. The twist is that it has acquired a writer who starred in an earlier feature. Want to discover who they are and where they appeared before?

The Story of Sony’s Spider-Verse

The Spider-Verse tells the epic saga of Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of Earth-1610. His story begins after he witnesses the murder of his universe’s Peter Parker. And things become more complicated when he meets another Peter Parker from an alternate reality. From there, Miles gets drawn into a battle against various supervillains. The good thing is he has Peter and other Spider-Heroes to help him out.

Over a year later, Miles continues his duties as Earth-1610’s one and only Spider-Man. The main downside is that his secret vigilante escapades are causing friction with his parents. His situation worsens when a portal-making supervillain dubbed the Spot arrives. Miles soon meets the Spider Society, a massive assembly of Spider-People from across the multiverse. But the moment turns sour when he realizes they tell him his father must die.

The next Spider-Verse movie will continue Miles’ story and battle against the Spot. But there’s another film in the works that will add to the overall series. It’s a spin-off centered around Hobie Brown, also known as the guitar-wielding Spider-Punk from Earth-138. He appeared in Across the Spider-Verse with Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya portraying him.

There’s little information about the movie, yet there’s confirmation that Kaluuya is involved. He’s serving as a writer, like he did for the British film The Kitchen. And he’ll be writing alongside Ajon Singh as he did with Joe Murtagh in 2023.

Of course, there’s a high chance Kaluuya will also reprise Hobie for this future flick. This suspicion, though, remains to be confirmed in an eventual update. And it probably won’t arrive until after the next Spider-Verse movie premieres in 2027.

Final Thoughts

I haven’t watched the Spider-Verse films in their entirety yet. But I’ve heard good things, and the clips I’ve seen certainly instigate excitement. These movies are definitely on my bucket list, if I find the time. If so, I’ll have to catch the upcoming third installment in theaters in 2027.

As for the Spider-Punk movie, it undoubtedly sounds like an intriguing idea. I especially like the fact that Daniel Kaluuya is co-writing this film. It makes me optimistic that it’ll receive the work and dedication it deserves. But we won’t know for sure until it arrives in theaters in the far future.
