Jin’s stardom with BTS has paved the way for his solo success

Originally a hip hop group, BTS expanded their musical style to incorporate a wide range of genres.  Their lyrics have focused on a plethora of subjects including mental health, coming of age, loss, self-love, and the price of fame.  Debuting in 2013, the band’s first releases included 2 Cool 4 Skool (2013), O!RUL8,2? (2013), and Skool Luv Affair (2014).  By 2017, BTS had crossed into the global music market and led the Korean Wave into the United States.  In 2020, they became the fastest group since the Beatles, to chart four US number-one albums in less than two years.  In the same year, they also reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200.

Jin’s new music is on the horizon

To date, BTS is the best-selling musical act in South Korean history having sold 40 million albums. Their album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the fourth best-selling album of all time in South Korea, as well as the first in the country to surpass both four and five million registered sales. On June 14, 2022, the group announced a scheduled pause in group activities to enable the members to complete their 18 months of mandatory South Korean military service. Jin, the eldest member, enlisted on December 13, 2022, while the others followed in 2023. All members completed their services by June 2025, and in a livestream BTS announced that new music is being planned for spring 2026.
