Attack on London Hunting the 7/7 Bombers

Netflix Hit ‘Attack on London’ Covers the Tragic 7/7 Bombings

On July 7th, 2005, there was a horrific attack on London. It was the worst act of terror that the UK has ever seen on its soil. We just crossed the solemn 20-year anniversary of this. It is still as painful today as it was back then. Netflix has a special, released July 1, 2025, that examines what happened in the bombing attack.

In the early morning hours, three men left Leeds and met their fourth accomplice in Luton. They then proceeded to travel to London prior to the morning rush hour. They carried large knapsacks filled with homemade explosives.

Four coordinated explosions occurred on the London transit system. Three of them were detonated in the underground train system, also known as the tubes. The attacks were at Russell Square, Edgware, and Aldgate. Another explosive device was detonated on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square. In all, 52 people sadly lost their lives that day, and nearly 800 people were injured.

Who Was Responsible for the Attack on London?

The suicide bombers were four men, all British citizens, and between the ages of 18 to 30. These radicalized young men were discovered to be responsible for the horrible acts of terrorism. It was determined to be related to Al-Qaeda. Investigators had to work backward, as each one had perished in the attack.

Investigation into the Attack on London

About 6,000 hours of videotape were meticulously reviewed. The steps of these four men had to be retraced. It was later determined that Mohammad Sidique Khan was the leader of the four. It was at first speculated, but there was no fifth suspect.

In another unbelievable twist, exactly two weeks later, on Thursday, July 21, 2005, another attack was attempted. This time, thankfully, it was thwarted by authorities. London’s transit system would have fallen victim again. In a terrible case of mistaken identity, an innocent person, Jean Charles de Menezes, was tragically gunned down by UK police.

Documentary Examining the Attack

The recent four-part docuseries on Netflix, Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers, chronicles the terrorist attack, the inquisition, its impact on London, and how the world was changed from it. The series looks into both the July 7th terror bombings and the July 21st attempted attack.

The Netflix series delves deep into how the acts of terrorism were planned, the reasons behind them, and how British authorities reacted. It also pays tribute to the victims and survivors. As difficult as this may be to recount, valuable lessons can be learned from it and could hopefully bring about more peace and understanding.
