Ladies and gentlemen, we hope you are ready to grab your denim! You are probably wondering what you need your denim for… Well, have you heard of Denim Day? If you answered yes, then thank you for your support and solidarity. However, if you answered no, then keep on reading, because this article will tell you all you need to know about Denim Day and how it all began.
Understanding Denim Day’s Role in Sexual Assault Prevention
Denim Day falls on the last Wednesday in April, which just so happens to be this week. April is known as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Every year in April, this campaign is promoted to help raise awareness in the public eye about sexual assaults. It assists in educating people as well as many communities throughout the United States on the possible ways sexual assault can be prevented.
Now, let’s get into why we wear denim! By wearing denim and encouraging others to wear denim, we are spreading awareness to take action and fight against victim blaming, which unfortunately happens too often. We find educating people about sexual violence to be imperative.
The Origins of Denim Day
We are going to give you some background on how Denim Day officially began. The creation of this day came forward after a high-profile rape trial that occurred in Italy. In 1992, an 18-year-old girl survived a traumatic act of sexual violence. Following her first driving lesson, the driving instructor forcibly sexually assaulted her and raped her. and she was blamed for her being raped due to the kind of jeans she had on.
The Italian Supreme Court ultimately wound up dismissing the charges against the 45-year-old driving instructor. Regrettably, the Head Judge argued,
“Because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them… and by removing the jeans… it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”
The “jeans alibi” was used to argue that since the victim’s jeans were so tight, the only way she could have gotten them off was if she aided her attacker in removing her jeans. The convicted rapist appealed to the Italian Supreme Court which overturned the conviction in a 1998 decision. The Italian Supreme Court stated in its decision:
“It is a fact of common experience that it is nearly impossible to slip off tight jeans even partly without the active collaboration of the person who is wearing them.”
The court’s decision rightfully brought an outcry all over the world.
Standing in Protest and Solidarity
In 1999, the Denim Day campaign was created as an international act of protest. The idea that the survivors should be at fault or should even be held responsible for being attacked is absurd. Now every year, we use this day to honor the survivors who experience shaming and blame after being raped or assaulted. Furthermore, Denim Day is seen as a symbol of protest against the many misconceptions that surround sexual assault. As we continue to stand in togetherness for rape and sexual assault/violence survivors, we promote individuals to wear denim.
