5 Highly Anticipated Nontraditional “Superhero” Stories Coming in 2024

Lately, there seems to be a rise in the popularity of nontraditional superhero stories, where the main character is questionable at best. These heroes typically lack the major qualities of traditional heroes, such as courage, morality, and integrity. Popular examples that come to mind are Wolverine, the Hulk, and Deadpool, the latter of which is known for his reluctance and sarcasm in the face of hardship. Other stories are just full-out antihero tales, such as The Joker, Venom, and Harley Quinn. Some fans even consider characters like Christian Bale’s Batman and the Guardians of the Galaxy squad as “antiheroes.” Here’s a sneak peek at some upcoming nontraditional superhero stories coming in 2024!

Deadpool & Wolverine

Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine will follow the heroes as they team up to defeat the evil Cassandra Nova Xavier, the twin of Marvel villain Professor X. The film, which will be released on July 26, will integrate Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This will be the third Deadpool film, with the first having been released in 2016 and the second in 2018. Based on the success of the film, it seems Marvel will incorporate more of Deadpool into the MCU moving forward. To read our analysis of the upcoming Deadpool film, click here!

The Boys: Season 4 (The world’s most questionable Superheroes are back!)

The Boys is an Amazon Prime series that puts a spin on the classic superhero story; in this show, each superhero puts on a public persona of being good and helping people, whereas they’re all actually horrible people behind closed doors. According to IMDb, “In The Boys, a world exists where superheroes, known as Supes, are revered as celebrities, managed by the powerful Vought International. However, beneath the glamorous facade lies a dark truth: most Supes are corrupt and abuse their powers.”

Personally, I think this series is an excellent commentary on how our society treats celebrities. We often idolize them, putting them on pedestals and thinking they can do no wrong – But how many actually use their platform for good? This is similar to The Boys universe, created by Eric Kripke, where the supes are idolized. However, as fans of the show know, many are quite irredeemable characters.

The Boys, which is entering its fourth season, also led to the creation of a spin-off series titled Gen V. Gen V follows a new class of young supes training to become heroes at a special college for those gifted with powers. Gen V season 2 is slated for later this year, while The Boys season 4 premieres on June 13. To catch up on all of The Boys news before the superheroes return in the upcoming season, read more here!

Joker: Folie à Deux

The sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, will hit theaters in October 2024. The film, which stars Joaquin Pheonix and Lady Gaga, will follow the pair after they meet in an asylum. The duo soon strike up a romantic relationship, determined to make the most of their situation. This will be Gaga’s third major role since starring in A Star is Born and House of Gucci. Gaga is set to play Harley Quinn, with Pheonix reprising his role as The Joker. Many fans wonder: how will Gaga’s performance match up to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey? How is Phoenix’s Joker different from those who took on the role before him (Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Jared Leto)? Kraven: The Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is set for release in December 2024. While much is not yet known about the film, we do know that Johnson will play Sergei Kravinoff, a big-game hunter.
