5 of the Best Sports Movies of All Time

Who doesn’t love a feel-good sports movie? Whether it’s rooting for your favorite team or watching an underdog shine, people generally love any type of heartwarming sports story. They remind us to defy the odds, exemplify the pursuit of excellence, and showcase the value of hard work and perseverance. No matter the sport, there’s something out there for everyone. Here’s a look at 5 of the best sports movies of all time.

It was so hard to make this list! Narrowing it down to only five movies proved quite a difficult feat. Personally, my favorite sports movie growing up was The Sandlot, but other honorable mentions include Field of Dreams, Miracle, Raging Bull, Moneyball, Coach Carter, and Million Dollar Baby, among many others. Sports Movie #1: Rocky

Rocky is a comeback story for the ages. It follows boxer Rocky Balboa as he strives to become the world heavyweight boxing champion. When the odds are stacked against him, can Rocky prevail? In my opinion, Rocky is THE underdog story! Starring Sylvester Stallone, Rocky as a sports movie has several sequels and even inspired the spin-off Creed movies. Stream it today!

Sports Movie #2: A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own follows an all-female baseball league set against the backdrop of World War II. While the men are off at war, the women are recruited to play baseball in their absence. The movie subverts typical gender roles, highlights women in sports, breaks barriers in terms of representation, and is extremely groundbreaking for the time. The movie created lots of conversations on how women are just as capable, if not more capable, than men. A League of Their Own stars Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Lori Petty. In 2022, Amazon Prime adapted a spin-off series of the original movie, which examined the story from a more modern lens.

Sports Movie #3: Remember the Titans

When an all-black school and an all-white school merge into one, the fate of the school’s treasured football team hangs in the balance. Can the boys put their differences aside and learn to work together, both on and off the field? Remember the Titans stars Denzel Washington as Herman Boone, the motivational coach responsible for turning the team around. The film is lauded for its examination of social issues, including integration.

Sports Movie #4: Hoosiers

Hoosiers – starring Gene Hackman – showcases themes of second chances and overcoming adversity. Per the synopsis, “Failed college coach Norman Dale gets a chance at redemption when he is hired to direct the basketball program at a high school in a tiny Indiana town.” Can he whip the team into shape before it’s too late? If you’re a basketball fan, this movie is definitely worth the watch!

Sports Movie #5: Rudy

Rudy stars Sean Astin as the titular character and is based on a true story. Rudy’s lifelong dream is to play football at Notre Dame, but he can’t afford it. Can Rudy overcome the obstacles on his path to success? Throughout the course of the film, Rudy is eventually granted admission to the university and begins working his way up the ladder, in time earning a spot on Notre Dame’s coveted football team. The film’s overall message is that hard work really pays off. Overall, Rudy is a story of perseverance and the refusal to give up on a dream. It is one of those movies bound to make audiences feel inspired after they watch it.
