Tom Holland is most known for his web-slinging role as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like most movie-goers, Holland wasn’t on our radar before his 2016 debut in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. Dawning his own unique version of the emblematic red, and blue spider suit, we knew instantly Holland embodied a natural charisma required for the silver screen. However, if we step away from the endearing popularity of Spider-Man, we see that Holland has procured quite the resume in the world of cinema.

Holland’s role as Nick “Cherry” Banks in Cherry is his most layered performance to date. Banks, a young army medic stricken with a heroin addiction is Holland at his most raw. The film didn’t gain as much attention as his other works, but it was a necessary departure from his more mainstream roles. This pivotal role proves Holland is capable of conquering character-driven stories with notable depth.

This southern gothic thriller was perfect for bolstering Holland’s acting capabilities. This film is quite the transition from our lovable crime-fighting superhero. Here, we see Holland committed to his convictions as an ill-equipped, self-made vigilante with a vendetta against evil. His emotions are raw and palpable as he works his way through every thrilling scene and embodies the disastrous trials of Arvin Russell. This entry in Holland’s career is a visceral tale of generational trauma, a tale that fans continue to praise for its impassioned and somber setting.

The Impossible was Tom Holland’s debut on the silver screen, and he absolutely made himself known as a serious actor. This film immediately solidified Holland as a future film star by displaying his range and prowess in this gripping retelling of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Holland’s portrayal of Sam, a 14-year-old boy who must become the protector of his family in the wake of a cataclysmic tragedy, kept us anxious until the very end.

Final Thoughts

Starting his movie career at just 14, we can see why Holland quickly became an established name in the world of cinema. His range and depth provide a pendulum of emotion that makes him suitable for practically any role. Although we hope to see Holland in more serious roles in the future – we’re excited to see his return to the big screen in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
