So, you’ve seen The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, and you’ve been left with some questions. We have questions too. Let’s ponder 3 burning questions from The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale.
What’s Next for June Osborne?
After The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale, we’re left with some loose threads for June (Elisabeth Moss). There are some clues we can gather from the episode.
June and Luke talked about what’s next for them. So we know that Luke will be working with Mayday, and June plans to work with Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger). We know that Boston is free of Gilead, and there is a conversation about going from state to state to drive out Gilead and restore freedom. June also asked her mother (Cherry Jones) to take care of her daughter so she could continue to fight.
From all of this, we can guess that June is going straight into danger again. But things aren’t the same anymore. She’ll be going into places she isn’t familiar with and dealing with new enemies she doesn’t know. There won’t be any Nick or Joseph to provide support on the inside. It’s far more dangerous than before, and it was already pretty dangerous. So, we have to wonder if June will survive what’s to come.
But there are a couple of other clues. We know that she wants to find Hannah, and she and Luke have promised a future together. That gives us hope. It would be nice to see June and Luke together with their children in the end.
What About Serena Joy?
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale leaves Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) and her baby in a refugee shelter. She’s been told they aren’t supposed to have children there, so the following day, she has to look for another place to stay. She also has very little in the way of supplies. She has a bag with a diaper, a onesie, and a few other things. That’s hardly enough. Serena has been pampered and provided for in the past. She lived in large houses and, even after that, she didn’t have to survive on her own for long. The next days, weeks, and months will be difficult for Serena.
When she admitted that she was ashamed of what she’d done to June, it looked like Serena had finally turned a corner. She sees the truth instead of the lies she has been telling herself. And she seems to be content with being a mother, but Serena has always had influence. How long before she inserts herself into government in some way again?
There aren’t a lot of other clues for what Serena will do next. Based on her past, it’s difficult to believe she’ll just sit back and do nothing. Once she achieves some measure of security, it’s almost certain she’ll find influential work to do. What will that be? We’ll have to wait to see if she reappears.
What About Gilead?
Boston had been liberated before The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale. But Gilead still has control over most of the former United States. We know this because we saw a flag that has only 3 stars on it. That’s a strong indicator of the situation. We don’t know how much military the U.S. still has. We saw a few planes and some soldiers. And there’s Mayday. But what kind of military does Gilead command? Who is at the top of the Gilead government in Washington, D.C.?
There are a lot of questions about Gilead remaining. When the spin-off series, The Testaments, airs, we’ll get some answers. The new series is based on Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name. Reading the book will give a lot of clues to that. We do know that Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia, has been cast in the new series. And Hannah will be present as well.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Finale
That’s a wrap with The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale. It’s been a wild ride, and if there wasn’t a new series to look forward to, it would be more difficult to say goodbye. A trip to the library for The Testaments by Margaret Atwood is on the to-do list. And, of course, rewatching The Handmaid’s Tale when the release of the new series is closer. Until then, the questions remain!
