Chances are, you’ve at least heard of Bridgerton, Netflix’s beautiful regency-era period drama that has permeated tv culture over the last few years. Based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance book series, Bridgerton follows a family of wealthy upper-class members of society in a fictional regency-era England. Each season focuses on a different member of the family and their journey to find love. There are also side plots with drama and intrigue.
Bridgerton currently has two and a half seasons. While you’re waiting for season 3, part 2 to come out, you might be craving another period drama to get you by. I’m here to recommend 3 stunning period dramas to watch after you finish Bridgerton.
#1 Period Drama To Watch After Bridgerton
My absolute favorite period drama of all time, and my top recommendation, is Outlander. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s historical fantasy-romance novel series of the same name, Outlander follows Claire Randall when she is thrown back through time and into the 18th century Scottish Highlands while on a vacation with her husband after World War II. It is there that she meets a group of Scottish highlanders and is thrust into the unstable politics of 1743 Scotland.
There is romance, there’s intrigue, there’s violence, there’s drama. It’s a little bit fantasy, and it is amazing. It’s a beautifully produced show with phenomenal cinematography and one heck of a soundtrack. For all these reasons and more, I highly recommend watching Outlander. Outlander has 7 seasons.
#2 Period Drama To Watch After Bridgerton
Reign is another great romance period drama. In Reign, we follow Mary, Queen of Scots, and her ladies in waiting when Mary is brought to the French court to keep her safe from assassination attempts. Now, this show is more of a fantasy-lite show. There is some occultism and prophecy talk, but for the most part, the show focuses on the day-to-day political drama that comes from being at court in France during the 16th century.
Reign is not historically accurate, but it is quite addicting to watch. If you’re one of those watchers who is just here for the vibes, you’ll probably like Reign. It is heavy on the politics and scandal, but also on the girl power. Mary is a very strong character and her strength is showcased time after time as the show goes on. Reign has 4 seasons.
#3 Period Drama To Watch After Bridgerton
Hulu’s The Great is another period drama that is just absolutely out of this world entertaining. It follows Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, on her journey to become, well, great. It’s a satirical comedy-drama, so it’s got a different vibe from Outlander, Reign, and Bridgerton, but it’s very good nonetheless. The Great takes place in 18th century Russia, which is such a unique and interesting setting to follow. The Great currently has 3 seasons and is a Hulu original.
If you’ve been wondering what to watch after finishing the Bridgerton series, these are my top recommendations. Each of them brings something fun and unique to the table, and each stands on its own extremely well. There are many other period dramas to choose from, but I hope that narrowing them down for you aids you in your search for your next show to binge.
