3 of the Worst Love is Blind Couples

The reality television phenomenon Love is Blind first dropped on Netflix in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and every state issued stay at home orders, staying busy and entertained at home became more important than ever. Love is Blind provided that entertainment for millions of people.

The show is an experiment and sets out to ask the question the title suggests: is love blind? With a wall to separate them, 15 men and women date over a short period a time. If a couple gets engaged, they meet each other in person for the first time. They go on a romantic honeymoon and for just 4 weeks afterward, they live together and plan their weddings.

Love is Blind has produced successful couples that are still together today, but some were a bad match from the beginning. Here are the top 3.

#3: Jessica and Mark (Season 1)

https://gty.im/1480071507

Jessica Batten and Mark Cueveas were one of the first season’s engaged couples and even walked down the aisle, but they didn’t get married. The two had a lot in common in the dating “pods”, like loving the same baseball team and they seemed to have good conversation, but Jessica was more interested in another man.

Matt Barnett, who went by Barnett, was Jessica’s first choice. He didn’t choose her, so Jessica accepted Mark’s proposal, and it was obvious to viewers that her heart wasn’t in it. At times, she was standoffish with her new fiancé and kept bringing up their 10-year age difference. It was almost like Jessica wanted Mark to break up with her because she was 34 and he was 24, and in her opinion, not totally ready to get married.

To make it even worse, every time the couples hung out Jessica would ask Barnett if he was sure he wanted to be with his fiancé Amber. It was clear that she was trying to undermine both of their relationships, so it was no surprise that when Jessica and Mark made it to the altar it didn’t end in “I do”.

After the show ended, it was revealed that Mark was cheating on Jessica with several people while filming.  Anyone could see that both of them wanted to find their soulmate and make a commitment (at least before the cheating rumors came out), but it wasn’t to each other.

#2: Clay and AD (Season 6)

Clay Gravesande and AD Smith were one of two couples to make it to their weddings in season 6. They looked to be deeply in love, but they were definitely not meant to be. AD is another Love is Blind contestant to go with her second choice. The match she was chasing a little more was with Matthew Duliba, who ended up leaving the pods after breaking with AD.

There were red flags in this relationship that AD refused to see. For example, when they were talking about having children someday, Clay told her that he wouldn’t “let her” gain too much weight and would help her get back to her pre-baby body. She laughed it off, but he was serious. He would tell often tell her how much he loved her and that she was the one, so it was surprising when he said no at the altar.

He said that he still wanted to be with her, but it wouldn’t have been right for him to say yes when he wasn’t ready. This was confusing considering how much he gushed about her being such a wonderful and supportive woman. AD was ready to make a commitment and Clay wasn’t, so it’s for the best they didn’t end up together after all.

#1: Irina and Zack (Season 4, Love was not blind)

Irina Solomonova and Zack Goytowski engagement was short lived and painful. Zack chose Irina over his other connection with Bliss Poureetezadi. Zack and Irina’s first meeting as an engaged couple was awkward and viewers knew right away that she wasn’t attracted to him.

She wouldn’t allow him to kiss her and told him that he was staring at her too intensely. Throughout the honeymoon, she didn’t show him any affection and distanced herself whenever she could. Zack would try to get close to her, but Irina just wasn’t comfortable. They ended their relationship during the honeymoon when they agreed it just wasn’t working.

They even teased each other about how bad their engagement was, and Zack admitted that he was going to pursue Bliss when they returned to the States. Zack and Irina were extremely awkward, and they should have ended it after their lukewarm meeting, but at least something good came out of it all. Bliss and Zack are married and now have a daughter, the first Love is Blind baby!

Honorable Love is Blind Mentions:

Deepti and Shake (Season 2): Shake tried to be physically attracted to Deepti but thought she was heavy (she wasn’t) and could only have friendship or family-like feelings toward her. He neglected to mention this before the altar.

JP and Taylor (Season 5): Their connection in the pods was magical, but JP stopped speaking to Taylor on the honeymoon. When she sat him down and demanded an explanation, he said he wasn’t attracted to her because she wore “pancake” makeup.
