The highly anticipated third entry to Danny Boyle’s thrilling Rage Virus Saga, 28 Years Later, sent fans into a tizzy with the new trailer released on Thursday. The trilogy shaped the way people view zombies and zombie thrillers, but this entry even further expands upon this foundation.

According the the official release, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected, but other survivors as well.”

The film features a star-studded cast, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. Each actor plays a critical role in the heart-pounding plot. Cillian Murphy is not playing a role as an actor this time, but he is listed as an executive producer. The trailer gives you an idea of the setting, straight out of a dystopian nightmare. The town is fearful, but the Wasteland is much worse. The rage virus has become much worse and mutated into something even darker.

From Yahoo Entertainment and Where is the Buzz, “The trailer’s most bone-chilling moments show ghastly, deformed humans. Some are infected, some are not, emerging from the shadows of abandoned cities, their eyes hollow, their movements too erratic to be fully human. It is strongly suggested that prolonged exposure to the virus, even without infection, has caused neurological decay, cult-like behavior, and perhaps even genetic corruption.” Society as a whole has become a nightmare, challenging people to their core. The plot seems as engaging as it is terrifying, and fans have a lot to look forward to.

28 Years Later Will Start Its Own Legacy

The most shocking reveal of the trailer release, however, may be that the movie will only be the first in its planned trilogy. The second film, entitled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is directed by Nia DaCosta. In her words, “While it’s very much informed by 28 Days Later, the script for The Bone Temple is very different. I was able to let my freak flag fly.” The new film should be a continuation of the storyline behind the mutation, and is rumored to be ready for release on January 16, 2026. The final movie in the trilogy has not yet been announced.

This news should give fans a lot of excitement for the future of the franchise. There is plenty more to discover about the virus, the lore, and the future of human civilization. For now, fans will have to be content with the trailer and the anticipation of what is to come. The legendary zombie films have much more in store, and based on the information released, they should continue to influence film culture in the way the original did. Fans will get to enjoy the full 28 Years Later film in theatres on June 20.
