Recently, Sony Pictures announced a continuation of the 28 Days Later film series titled 28 Years Later. This will serve as the first entry in the series since 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. As the producers give the press more and more info on the project, fans are eager to know as much as possible regarding the film. 28 Days Later follows Britain as a rapidly spreading “rage virus” takes over.
28 Days Later became famous not only for its gripping action but popularizing the “fast zombies” trope. Later zombie stories such as The Walking Dead and The Last of Us owe it inspiration. With the return of this groundbreaking franchise from the dead, here is everything for viewers to know.

At the time of writing, no major plot details have been announced for this upcoming horror film. However, viewers can infer a few things. The film will take place 28 years after the outbreak, as the title suggests. This would fit the naming scheme of the previous two films. Given how long it has been since the last films both in and out of the universe, this will leave plenty of room for change. With nearly three decades having passed, audiences will see how the rage virus of the first film had ravaged society in the long run.
Furthermore, this will not be a standalone sequel as it was announced as a trilogy. Audiences will have to wait and see what direction the series will go. However, with an entire trilogy in the works, one can expect the series to evolve and go in new directions. Since the previous films, the zombie genre rose to prominence once again, so this franchise will find its audience. Lastly, no teasers or release dates have been given for any of these films.

To capture the original film’s magic, Sony announced that many original crew members would return. Firstly, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland both signed to return. Since directing the original 28 Days Later, Boyle has directed other classics including Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs, and 127 Hours. As for Garland, he established himself through A24 with Ex Machina, Men, and the recent Civil War. As shown through their portfolios, both have built a reputation that will hopefully help this film succeed.
According to Deadline, Nia DeCosta signed on to direct the following film in the trilogy. DeCosta directed the 2021 reboot of Candyman, so she gained experience working in horror reboots. The returning crew and new talent can give a chance for this trilogy to succeed.

Sony Pictures announced a new cast for the film, which is fitting given how much time has passed. According to Deadline again, several key stars were announced. The main three are Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor Johnson, and Jodie Comer. Ralph Fiennes is a major star, with his fame from Harry Potter and the recent The Menu. Aaron Taylor Johnson is a rising star, having been in Age of Ultron, Bullet Train, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Lastly, Comer herself gained popularity through Killing Eve, The Last Duel, and Free Guy.
While Cillian Murphy was not confirmed to return, he signed on to produce. Murphy himself has become quite the star recently given the success of Oppenheimer. However, as he attached himself to the project, his onscreen return in a later film is not out of the question.
