Netflix’s star-making series, Baby Reindeer, was the newest cultural phenomenon that took the world by storm after it was released back in April 2024. The craziest part? It’s based on a true story, adapted from the lead actor’s real-life experiences. Baby Reindeer crushed expectations, amassing over 60 million views during its first month on Netflix and launching lead actress Jessica Gunning to worldwide fame.
Another series that has performed consistently well for Netflix has been Bridgerton, which just released its third season. The show is produced by television empire Shondaland, so you know it’s probably good. In fact, according to data, all three seasons of Bridgerton currently rank in Netflix’s top 10 most popular shows of all time, with Season 1 averaging 113.3 million views, Season 3 garnering 98.5 million views, and Season 2 clocking in at 93.8 million views. Safe to say, the public really approves of this one!
Other recent binge-worthy series include 3-Body Problem, Girls5eva, Ripley, and Griselda, all of which recently received at least one Emmy nomination. The 3-Body Problem was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, while Girls5eva secured an Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series nomination. Meanwhile, Sofia Vergara received a nomination for her role in Griselda, and Andrew Scott was nominated for his performance in Ripley, based on the book “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” If this is any indication, there are some shows you won’t want to miss!
Oldies, But Goodies
If you’re searching for a bit of nostalgia, Lost was just recently put on Netflix! The survivalist drama was huge around 20 years ago, collecting quite the following during its triumphant six-season run. Since the show came to the platform on July 1st, there has been lots of talk online of “they don’t make them like they used to anymore,” referring to Lost’s 22-24 episode structure. For example, one X user stated, “22 episodes, 6 seasons. Elevated broadcast drama structure. Lost was peak TV. Studios need to go back to making long-running, well-paced shows with a good number of episodes per season. Can we please also greenlight shows like this in 2024?!”
Two other shows that also embody this philosophy are Dexter and Suits. The former, which ran for eight seasons on Showtime, currently has a spin-off in the works titled Dexter: Original Sin. The series will be a prequel to the original, chronicling Dexter Morgan’s early days on the police force. Meanwhile, Suits, one of the longest-running legal dramas on television, was also recently greenlit for a spin-off. After releasing on Netflix in June 2023, it quickly became Netflix’s most streamed acquired title.
Binge-worthy Shows with Upcoming Seasons
One of the most talked about Netflix series to date has been Stranger Things, set to release its fifth season sometime next year. During its debut in 2016, the series was extraordinarily popular, becoming one of Netflix’s most lucrative series of all time. It was only recently dethroned as the platform’s most popular series of all time by the release of Wednesday but held strong to its title for several years. Additionally, The Night Agent, Wednesday, and Stranger Things are all currently ranked on Netflix’s “Top 10 Most Popular TV Shows of All Time” list, with Wednesday officially awarded the title of the platform’s most popular show. The series, which is closely followed by Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and The Night Agent, secured over 252.1 million views since its release.
Season 3 of Heartstopper is coming in October 2024, while The Night Agent and Wednesday both recently wrapped production of their second seasons earlier this summer. Additionally, the popular live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender was extremely well-received upon its release in February. After the first season’s success, Netflix confirmed that the series will return for a second and third season. Finally, the hit series Arcane, based on the League of Legends video game, will release a new season in November 2024.
Binge-worthy Reality TV Shows
The Mole, a popular reality series from the early 2000s, was recently added to Netflix’s platform. The series, the synopsis of which involves players being stranded together and forced to compete in various mental and physical challenges, has five seasons and is perfect for binging. Imagine Survivor mixed with The Traitors, and that’s The Mole. What could go wrong?
Other binge-worthy reality series from the platform include Perfect Match and Love Island USA. Perfect Match is a similar concept to reality shows like Are You the One? and Too Hot to Handle, where contestants compete to find their “perfect match” in a villa full of contestants. Another series set in a villa in which contestants search for love is Love Island USA. Although not as good as the original UK version of the show, the American version of Love Island is still a fun watch!
