Most Netflix Original movies enjoy tons of success and sometimes spend days on the Top 10 list. Bird Box and The Kissing Booth come to mind, but what about the Netflix Originals that were a little less popular and slipped through the cracks, but are worth a watch?
Every once in a while, you want to step away from the crowd and find your new favorite movie or TV series. There might be less hype, but there’s nothing like discovering an amazing movie to obsess over or show your friends and family. Your next movie night pick could be here.
#5: See You Yesterday
See You Yesterday focuses on police brutality and the black community through a science-fiction lens. This Netflix original stars Eden Duncan-Smith and Astro as brother and sister C.J. and Calvin Walker. When Calvin is murdered by police, C.J. and her friend build a time machine to go back in time and save him.
It’s thrilling, but also shines a light on the injustice the black community faces and raises a fascinating question about time: are certain events just meant to happen or can we change our fates? The cliffhanger is hard to deal with, but See You Yesterday is still a must-see.
#4: I Am Not an Easy Man

This French Netflix original is about a misogynistic man named Damien who wakes up in a world where women are considered the dominant sex. For the first time, he has to learn to respect women and what it feels like to be treated as a second-class citizen.
I Am Not an Easy Man is an educational feminist film that tackles gender roles, the objectification of women, and even assault culture. Add this to your watchlist ASAP!
#3: Burning Sands
Hazing is the topic of Burning Sands. Trevor Jackson is fraternity pledge Zurich, a hazing victim who is starting to wonder if the pain is worth becoming a member of a prestigious fraternity. As he struggles to speak up and do what’s right, the movie calls attention to peer pressure and what’s really happening on college campuses.
It’s a hard watch, but a necessary one. Give it a try; it’ll change your life.
#2: Awake
In this science-fiction Netflix thrill ride, the entire world has lost the ability to sleep. Jill, a veteran portrayed by Gina Rodriguez, is trying to save her two children before sleep deprivation kills her. Her daughter Matilda can sleep and Jill believes she’s the only hope for a cure if she can get to a secret government lab.
If you like a little horror, Awake is perfect. It’s full of action and excitement, and even has a happy ending!
The #1 Underrated Netflix Original: Roxanne Roxanne
Roxanne Roxanne premiered on Netflix in 2017. The biopic details the beginning of Roxanne Shante’s career as a hip-hop icon in the 90s. Played by Chante Adams, Roxanne’s star rises as she struggles to have a good relationship with her mother (played by the talented Nia Long), money troubles, an absent father, love, and the reality of the music business.
The biopic holds nothing back about her rough beginnings and her battle to make a name for herself. It’s inspirational and calls attention to how difficult it is to make it in hip-hop as a woman. Roxanne Roxanne is a must-see.
