2013s Monsters University Shamelessly Ripped Off By Lazy AI

Most internet users are already aware of AI’s encroachment on virtually every facet of entertainment and art. However, one of the more overlooked variants is AI-generated video. As bizarre as the concept sounds, computers have managed to recreate animation, albeit not very well. One film on the receiving end was Pixar’s classic Monsters University.

The AI-generated short Monster Camp & The Curse of the CandyCrest is just one of many examples of the creative bankruptcy of AI art. Here is a breakdown of why this AI “film” was such a disastrous ripoff of Monsters University.

Monsters University Gets AI Ripoff

Everyone nowadays knows the Pixar classic Monsters University for its wacky concept and endearing story. While it inspired many cheap imitators, none would be as downright terrible as the AI-generated trailer Monster Camp & The Curse of the CandyCrest. The trailer “followed” a group of monsters going to a camp. Whatever the plot is remains lost to whatever was given to the AI voice’s prompt.

The short itself was, in a word, terrible. It had generic narration, bland design, and art direction devoid of character, inexpressive cinematography, and stiff movements. Between shots, virtually none of the scenery remained consistent. As with all AI videos, the backgrounds and objects perpetually melt and swim in effect, which is equally nauseating and perplexing, like a surrealist painting made with no artistic intent or planning.

While unambiguously terrible, it made some strides by AI video standards. The character designs didn’t completely change every time they moved, and the level of detail was at least somewhat consistent. As it stands, however, AI-generated video is still in its infancy. That the project is such a shameless copy of Monsters University is another example of the medium’s creative bankruptcy. To further prove this, the video has ten dislikes for every like.

AI-Generated Video

While AI-generated voices and artwork are already controversial, AI-generated video comes with its forms of intrigue. Recently, AI made its first foray into generated video. Currently, the problems are the same with Monster Camp through its stiff animation devoid of character. However, as with all of AI’s forms, it has advanced at an unsettling speed.

Conversely, some AI-generated videos lean into uncanny insanity and go with it. Some creators have embraced this and created original and trippy short films. While AI-generated content remains a contentious topic, these videos are at least frank about this fact. With this ripoff of Monsters University, that certainly isn’t the case.

The War on AI

As bad as AI video is, it’s only one small part of the current controversy surrounding generative AI. Within a few years, AI went from a novel technology to a meme to a copyright violation. Even worse, the technology is advancing far faster than legislation. Sadly, major tech corporations caught wind of this and invested trillions of dollars into the software. As such, the software will unlikely be going anywhere anytime soon.

The pushback against AI has been solid and universal among writers, artists, animators, and actors. The SAG-AFTRA Strikes of last year were just one example. The film Late Night With the Devil was nearly boycotted for using AI-generated images for a few shots. Even so, AI-generated works flood the internet as they progressively encroach upon human creativity.

While it may not appear like it did in classic sci-fi films, the war against AI has already begun. Fortunately, films like Monsters University will always withstand the test of time compared to worthless, computer-generated ripoffs.
