This year has been amazing for RnB as many new artists and crossovers brought the heart and soul. Some singers blended the genre with their neighboring sounds, taking inspiration from Neo-Soul, old school R&B, as well as incorporating hip-hop elements. The genre was refreshing and proved that the richness of its sound is not a lost art and simply choosing just one RnB album was hard. Who had the best RnB album in 2024?

Honorable Mention: TYIT21 By Ayra Starr

The Nigerian-born singer Ayra Starr released her second studio album, The Year I Turned 21. The Afrobeats star decided to branch out, releasing a masterful album with elements of pop and strong RnB elements. She did an excellent job of showing a different side to her, a much softer side. The album only has two singles, and she released the first single, Rhythm & Blues, last year. As the album title implies, she gets personal on this album, capturing her emotions and thoughts as a young adult navigating the world. The album got a rating of 7.6 on Pitchfork

3. Jaguar II: Deluxe By Victoria Monet

Victoria Released the deluxe version of her Grammy-winning album, Jaguar II. Jaguar II was the album that catapulted Monet into the mainstream scene and has fans crediting her for the revival of RnB music. Victoria is a songwriter and has written popular songs in the past, but with this album, she was able to bring herself to the forefront.

The deluxe album offers ten additional songs, which includes a feature she pre-released with Usher for their song, S.O.S (S*x On Sight). This song instantly feels like a classic, as it feels like she leans into his era. The album is reminiscent of the 90s RnB, both audibly and visually.

2. Coming Home By Usher

Usher performs during his Past Present Future tour at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Usher is an RnB legend and there’s no disputing that. He is best known for his dance moves and charm and, of course, his raunchy lyrics. And with the release of his 9th studio album, Coming Home, he did not hold back. In February 2024, Usher’s listeners were taken on a beautiful rollercoaster ride.

It fed his most dedicated fans and the new-age pop RnB scene. He released the album’s first single, ‘Good Good’ in August 2023. It features rapper 21 Savage and singer Summer Walker and debuted at number 25 on the charts. Altogether, it has three singles and peaked at number 2 on the album charts.

1. Tyla+ By Tyla

Tyla is a newcomer, and although she’s primarily considered an Amapiano star, there’s no surprise why people refer to her debut album as an RnB album. In 2024, she came out swinging. She brought, from South Africa, a refreshing sound and a new take on the genre. Tyla released her debut self-titled Album, Tyla. She blends her homegrown genre, Amapiano, as well as pop, and delivered one of the most tasteful albums of 2024. Some songs are more RnB than others, like her promo single, Butterflies, a soft melodic RnB track that speaks of love. It emphasizes her vocals and proves that she’s more than a dance hit maker, but that she’s a singer.

She released the deluxe version just in time for her return home. A song that is taking off and resonating with the people is the heavily Amapiano-influenced song, ‘Shake Ah’. She features Tony Duardo, Optimist, and Maestro and she sings in one of the 11 official South African languages, Isi-Zulu.

In Conclusion

RnB had a lovely year in 2024. For a while, it seemed that the genre was drowning, but now it looks like there’s been a change. In R&B circles, artists arose from various places in the world, and the American market didn’t push out albums alone. That might be why the genre feels so alive in 2024. Its audience had a buffet of various sounds, voices, and stories to choose from. Many breakout artists in R&B who had successful albums gave us deluxe versions. Tyla, Victoria, and even Jorja Smith delivered hard-hitting tracks on their deluxe that prolonged the journey and the feel.
