Cross-Generational Work Relationships: Boomers to Gen Z

cross-generational

In organizations, there are many generations of employees. We have the Boomers, Generation X, Y, and Z employees. There is a need to understand these cross-generational work relationships.  It can help to maintain a healthy team and a productive workplace.  Let’s start by explaining the different generations. Boomers are born between 1955 and 1964. They usually have a lot of work experience and are hard-working. Generation X, born from 1965 to 1980, can be described as independent and adaptable.

Gen Y, or Millennials, born from 1981 to 1996 are known to be often team-focused and in search of purposeful work. They like to work with other people and want to exchange information. Then we have Gen Z individuals born in 1997 and after who are digital-oriented and knowledgeable about technology.

Communication Across Generations

Communication strengthens cross-generational work relationships. Every generation knows how they would like their generations to communicate. For example, Boomers may prefer phone calls or in-person meetings, while Gen Z often wants to communicate through texts or social media. In maintaining these cross-generational work relationships, you should be ready to communicate effectively.

It is important to allow team members to express their preferred modes of communication. Sometimes, you may have physical meetings, emails, or text messages. That way, it will be convenient for everyone, and everyone feelsvalued.

Mentorship

Another way to build up cross-generational work relationships is mentorship. Boomers can manage their experience by sharing or mentoring Generation Z employees. Boomers can help with industry knowledge and strengths, whereas Gen Z will have fresh new tools and trends. This way, Generation Z employees will learn from the boomers. And the boomers will also learn new things from Generation Z.  This exchange makes both generations better equipped to handle tasks, and the workplace is unified by knowledge connection.

Celebrate Diversity

Patrick Henry, 1st and 6th Governor of Virginia, once said, “United we stand and divided we fall.” It is important to celebrate and value these cross-generational relationships. Any organization that respects age diversity will most likely record an improvement in morale and productivity. Try organizing activities that enhance teamwork among the employees. Encourage creativity sessions, parties, or hangouts. Team members’ ages may vary, but if they work as a team, it can build trust and togetherness. Drawing attention to even minor wins as a group is a way to support the notion that every employee is valuable to an organization.

Final Thoughts

Understanding cross-generational work relationships is important in promoting a healthy workplace. If we know the differences among generations, we can work on different modes of communication. Also, consider mentoring and embrace diversity. People will feel welcome anywhere. You can build trust and togetherness in the organization. Make sure everyone feels respected and valued. As we operate in an environment where cross-generational work relationships are the norm, be considerate of others and embrace the opportunity.
