British singer and songwriter RAYE is no stranger to taking home awards. In March, she broke records by taking home an impressive six Brit Awards. At the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards (VMA), the 26-year-old was nominated for her video, “Genesis.” RAYE was nominated in the Video for Good Category. Although she did not take home the coveted moonman award this year, her intense video marks another milestone in her rapidly ascending career.
Follows Creativity
Rachel Agatha Keen, known professionally as RAYE, has worked behind the scenes of the music industry before stepping into the spotlight with her debut album, My 21st Century Blues. According to an article by The Standard, RAYE publicly took a stand against her label because it imposed creative restrictions on her first album. In the end, she followed her instincts and got out of her first major deal with Polydor Records.
As a songwriter, RAYE has worked with several high-profile artists. In a top ten compilation of her songs by the Victoria and Albert Museum on their website, she has worked with Elle Goulding, Charli XCX, and even Beyonce.
First Album Earns Multiple Awards
Now that RAYE has come into her own, she is reaping the rewards of staying true to herself. According to the BBC, RAYE took six out of seven categories she was nominated for at the 2024 Brit Awards this spring. Her songwriting skills earned her the award for Songwriter of the Year. This was the first time a woman had won in this category.
By winning a total of six awards, RAYE also claimed another Brit Awards title. Even though she lost one of her categories for the evening, six award wins were enough to catapult her ahead of Adele, Blur, and Harry Styles to set a new record for the most award wins in a single night.
Video for Good
The nominees for MTV’s Video For Good award included some of the top names in the music industry. The official VMA website lists the winner as Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For? (From the Motion Picture Barbie). Other nominees included Alexander Stewart, Coldplay, Joyner Lucas & Jelly Roll, and Tyler Childers.
This is an award that celebrates videos that were created to address social issues positively. The most intriguing part of “Genesis” was the lyrics typed out as RAYE spoke them into existence. The perspective comes from someone who is trying to crawl out of a world of isolation caused by placing a high value on social media interactions.
When the beat drops, we are looking at a whole new RAYE. She is center stage and is serving up a full dish of main character energy. Genesis is the right word for the video, as it moves through three distinct stages that are relative to her career journey.
Final Thoughts
Although RAYE did not win big at the MTV Music Video Awards this year, she is still coming out on top. “Genesis” is a strong music video that showcases her writing and singing talents, which are multi-faceted. After listening to her songs, it was surprising to learn she was not nominated for a Grammy award this year. She will be an artist to watch for in the future.
