It’s been nearly four decades since the first and only Transformers animation film was released, and now, Paramount Pictures is releasing the second animated film, Transformers ONE. Although this film will be the second overall animated film, the live-action films kept the popular Hasbro franchise in the spotlight.
Michael Bay’s started the Transformers live-action movie franchise in 2007 and it was an instant hit. Since then, a total of seven Transformer films have been released, all of which Di Bonaventura produced. In fact, the 1986 Transformers animated film is the only film that wasn’t made by Bonaventura.
The Release of the Official Trailer
After dropping an official trailer, fans’ anticipation for Transformers ONE has skyrocketed. The prequel film will center the origin story between Optimus Prime and Megatron’s epic rivalry. Moreover, the film will also introduce fans to Cybertron and the trailer’s beautiful animation does a great job at bringing the planet to life.
Before Optimus Prime and Megatron got their names, they were known as Orion Pax and D-16 respectively. Likewise, the story will show the brotherhood between the two and how they would become bitter enemies. Overall, Transformers ONE will also bring a new perspective to the Autobots and Decepticons’ conflict that would bring the long-standing series to mainstream fame.
The 1986 Transformers Film
The 1986 animated film mostly follows the same continuity established in the cartoon. Following an intense war between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth, both sides would suffer severe losses. While the Autobot’s leader, Optimus Prime, dies from his injuries, the Decepticon’s leader, Megatron, is transformed into Galvatron by the main villain and planet eater, Unicron. From here, the Autobots must band together despite their loss to save the world.
In essence, the 1986 film was considered a step up from the animated series as children in the 1980s and 1990s are still fans. Overall, the film uses a more serious plot showing the effects of war and violence, while grabbing popular celebrities of the time to provide voice work, thanks to the film’s increased budget.
According to comments made by Bonaventura at the Annecy Animation Festival, he doesn’t particularly like the 1986 animation film. The reason Bonaventura doesn’t see the appeal in the 1976 film is because of how dark the film is as he considers it a downer. Despite the comparisons, Di Bonaventura considers Transformers ONE to be the superior film as he believes that the film has more life.

In addition to the cast, famous actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Keegan-Michael Key, and Steve Buscemi. Furthermore, director Josh Cooley will take the helm of bringing the film to life and who would be better for the job? After his work on Toy Story 4 won an Academy Award, Cooley may be the best person to make a classic animated movie.
Paramount Pictures Confident in Transformer’s Success
Considering Transformers ONE was screened months ahead of its release shows how confident Paramount Pictures are in the film. Moreover, fans should thank Industrial Light & Magic for the film’s stunning artwork and animation. Regarding the script, it was written in a way for both die-hard fans and newcomers to enjoy the film.
Lastly, the film portrays the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron in a way that will make fans care, especially when these two former friends become rivals. Ultimately, Transformers ONE will be released in theatres on September 24th, 2024.
