The Rick and Morty anime has just released its first episode on Friday, August 16. Fans of the original show are in for a wild ride. Taking place between Seasons 6 and 7 of the main series, the spin-off hits the ground running. Rick is on the run from the Galactic Federation, while Morty is immersed in a VR game.
Rick & Morty: The Anime Lore
The Rick and Morty znime takes place between seasons 6 and 7 of the original Rick & Morty TV show. At the beginning of season 6, Prime Rick encounters Jerry Smith from the Cronenberg universe. This happens are C-137 Rick sends Prime Rick back to Earth. Unfortunately, Prime Rick kills this version of Jerry Smith. And in the post-credits scene of Rick & Morty: The Anime, this version of Jerry is still alive. He kills the Cronenberg version of Morty and Elle as they reunite. Of course, there are multiple universe jumps throughout the episode. But cements the overall timeline of the anime universe so far. It also seems to be following the C-137 Rick & Morty from the original series.
Rick & Morty Anime Timeline
As the first episode progresses, Rick and Morty both get pulled into some confusing time-centered adventures. Rick is seemingly being led around the Galaxy by the Entropy Bomb in his possession. Meanwhile, Morty is wrapped up in a VR game designed by Rick to keep him busy. Although being a game similar to Roy from Season 2, this has no linear timeline. Morty encounters multiple strange characters and explores multiple lives.
A giant alien creature attacking is the cataclysm for each new encounter Morty experiences. It can be assumed that these are all different versions of Morty. First, Morty gets eaten, and then the sequence is reversed. This repeats, and Morty wakes up to find a blond girl has saved him. She introduces herself as Elle and is happy to see him before kissing him. Morty repeats the sequence, as a long-haired Rick appears, stating that his own Morty is dead. Finally, Frank appears and takes Morty through different lives.
The various timelines see Morty becoming a politician and dying while calling for Elle. Another sees Morty married and unhappy as he runs into Frank. Morty receives a globe from both Elle and Frank before these events. Elle calls it the Nander Dragon’s Tears, whereas Frank refers to it as the Nander Dragon’s sweat. Both play an important role in the events occurring within the VR game.
Who Elle Is
The Rick and Morty anime introduces two new characters right off the back. First, one version of Morty has a girl named Elle saving him from a giant monster. She can be seen with another version of Morty as they sit together in a mall. This is where Elle hands him the Nander Dragon Tears and hints at her abilities to travel through time. And in her introduction to Morty, she mentions having missed him. It is safe to assume she is Morty’s love interest.
The upcoming Episode 3 title for the Rick and Morty anime is called “Elle the Alien”. This alludes to the fact that Elle may not be human. Long-haired Rick’s appearance, admitting to Morty’s death, is also important. It could mean Elle has come back in time from a future where Morty has died. Of course, this is just a theory, but hints at just how much deeper the show will delve into the Rick & Morty lore. Furthermore, Elle’s appearance in the Opening Theme further paints her as an important character.
Who Frank Is
The other character introduced in the Rick and Morty anime is a brown-haired guy named Frank. Morty first sees him when confronting the group of NPCs within the game. Then, Frank also saves Morty from the giant monster, appearing in a metal suit with the letter ‘F’ on the chest. He is also the one to lead Morty down multiple lives. One of them sees him becoming Morty’s ally in the world of politics.
Frank also gives Morty a globe, similar to Elle, but calls it Nander Dragon Sweat instead. Of course, this is significant as it solidifies the importance of both Frank & Elle in the universe. Even more so, both characters are connected to Morty’s death in some way or other. Frank and Elle don’t appear in the same timelines. This is another hint at time travel and the convoluted timelines being explored.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the first episode of the Rick and Morty anime feels like a spin-off of the original show. However, with the multiple timeline jumps and the introduction of new Rick variants, it holds a lot of promise. Elle did not reveal a lot of her abilities, but it seems she has some interesting things up her sleeve. Furthermore, Long-haired Rick’s appearance and Morty’s death feel a lot like foreshadowing. The original show could get very dark at times, and potentially, the Rick and Morty anime might top that.
