BET Pauses Soul Train Music Awards and BET Hip Hop Awards

BET has abruptly suspended both the BET Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Music Awards. Confirmed by BET CEO Scott Mills in an interview with Billboard Magazine, the decision is one that has shocked millions. While many believe that the decision was due to rapid declines in viewership, Mills explained that the network’s team is actively working to reimagine the events for the evolving media landscape. Ultimately, this means that the suspension is not a permanent cancellation. Instead, the shows might transition to a new format or platform, such as streaming.

Both award shows have helped to shape the culture

Debuting in 1987, the Soul Train Music Awards was produced by Don Cornelius. Cornelius also created the pioneering and long-running musical television show Soul Train, the popular award show featured live musical performances by prominent artists and has traditionally aired in the late fall. The original trophy being an African ceremonial mask, was later redesigned in 2009 to feature a train motif. Another extension of the show was the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Aired from 1995 to 2005, the show solely honored female artists.

Will BET allow these shows to return?

Premiering in 2006, the BET Hip Hop Awards celebrated achievements in hip hop music. In addition to award presentations, the show’s highlights included performances and cyphers. The most recent ceremony was aired on October 15, 2024, in Las Vegas.  Both have served as major cultural touchstones for celebrating Black music and culture.  While the future of these specific award shows is uncertain, Mills confirmed that other BET events like the NAACP Image Awards and Stellar Awards will continue. Stay tuned for future updates.
